The other day I was headed from one building to another to give a presentation. As I was walking, I was filled with dread… I was dreading a couple hours of interaction with people that I had barely met. I caught myself in the middle of this negative thinking. In reality, I really enjoy giving presentations. I do have some expertise to share. And I was prepared. I replaced my negative thoughts based in imagination with these more positive thoughts based in truth and reality.
I think the first step in changing thoughts is to recognize the negative thoughts and replace them with positive thoughts. A particular type of thought may be reoccurring and need to be challenged over and over again. Over time the negative can be replaced with the positive.
“As a man thinketh in his heart, so shall he be.” – James Allen
There may be some truth behind the negative thoughts that need changing. For example, if I was not prepared, I would need to think about what I need to do to get prepared. Or, I might consider how I can best handle this situation in the short run under current circumstances, and what I can do to make this type of situation better for the future.
We can change our thoughts, and by changing our thoughts, we can change our lives.
As James Allen said in As a Man Thinketh, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so shall he be.”
